First Annual Winter Market

This year, the Upper Elementary classrooms decided to expand their holiday tradition by adding an entire Winter Market. In the past, students created art cards on a theme and sold them on the last day before the holiday break. This year, with the support from their guides, Upper Elementary students in the Phoenix and Thunderbird classrooms created art cards as well as a variety of arts, crafts, baked goods and beverages, all hand-made by the students

The Creek campus welcomed parents, grandparents, and other students to join and shop with them. Like a well-run ship, the market had lots of team work with welcomers who let you know where to go and how to purchase, helpers at each table of goods, a cashier team, and even a wrapping section to get your gifts ready to give.

This year’s card theme was, “What represents Austin to you?” Students shared some oftheir favorite things about Austin by way of familiar landmarks, good food, and wildlife. While some cards have a winter theme, most can be used anytime of the year. Students used colored pencil or water colors on paper to create these images and took inspiration from the Austin they know and love.

In addition to greeting cards, the market sold “Charlie Brown Christmas Trees,” essential oil fire-starter bundles, origami ornaments, glitter slime, knit washcloths, and so much more. There was even a life auction with the original artwork created for each card! Outside the Avocado building, a full schedule of life music showed off the talents of our upper elementary students playing the piano, electric guitar, signing, and playing the ukulele. Guests could enjoy the music under the trees with home-made treats like cookies, brownies, and even hot apple cider.

Profits from the Winter Market went directly to CASA of Travis County. CASA is an advocate for children, speaking up for those who have been abused and neglected. By reaching out to the community, CASA helps find volunteers to be a voice for children as they go through the court system. We are so thrilled to be lending support to such important work!

Thank you to all who joined in, we cannot wait for next year’s market!
