Ted Talks: Reflecting on Our Strategic Priorities

By Ted Graf, Head of School

At this time last year, there was some uncertainty in the air. Students and guides were asking thoughtful questions and expressing a range of emotions about the results of the recent general elections. Our board chair, Heather Vickers, and I had begun community meetings to inform our community that several of the River Campus properties were on the market, and we had begun searching for an alternative location for the middle and high school. In addition to those efforts, we had recently renamed the school and revised our foundational language. The pace of change felt high and some of us felt a bit unsettled.

Though the political climate continues to be distracting and disturbing, what a difference a year makes in the life of a young school! As you all know by now, the question about location for the middle and high school programs has been answered. Thanks to the generosity from the school community, we have linked our commitment to the downtown location with an educational approach that emphasizes the city as a classroom. This has resulted in new partnerships and connections with Shoal Creek Conservancy, Amy’s Ice Creams, Waller Creek Conservancy, Agua Dulce Farms, and a growing list of others. The purchase of the downtown buildings was an important moment for the school, and, thanks to the efforts of so many, the school is in a position to be both strategic and intentional about its future.

Developed in the winter of 2016 with considerable community input, our strategic priorities will continue to guide our work:

I look forward to talking with you about these topics and about the state of the school in January. Please make time to attend one (or more) of these presentations by myself and Heather. As you’ll see below, we have scheduled a presentation on each campus, and we have done our best to offer them both in the morning and the evening. If none of these dates work for you and your family, we’ll consider adding a video or tech solution too.

  • Wednesday, January 17: Springs Campus State of the School, 9-10:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, January 18: Creek Campus State of the School, 8:30-10 a.m.
  • Tuesday, January 30: River Campus State of the School, 6:30-8 p.m.
