Hawks MS/HS Volleyball & Flag Football Camps | Summer 2024

Headwaters School
Get ready for the athletics season with two weeks of MS and HS flag football or volleyball camps!

Calling All Hawks!

Hawks Athletics is offering MS and HS Volleyball and Flag Football Camps during the weeks of August 5 and August 12. These camps are designed to give Headwaters fall athletes a jump-start on the season. All are welcome, though practice will be geared toward season prep and will mimic the practice times for the school year.

General Information

  • These camps are not mandatory, but highly encouraged for Headwaters Athletes planning on playing fall sports.
  • We will provide ice water and towels each day.
  • Official trial practices will begin the week of August 26.
  • Practices will be held during the same time during the school year.
  • Specifically for Flag Football, these camp days will serve as a heat acclimation period to prepare athletes for the season.
  • Dehydration can impact your energy levels, focus, and physical capabilities. It's essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day, not just during practices or games. All students should be well-hydrated and nourished prior to training or competing. See below for our Extreme Heat Safety details regarding temperature guidelines and hydration.
    • We strongly encourage all our students to bring a personal water bottle to every practice and game. Additionally, bringing a small cooler with a cold towel can help keep you cool and refreshed during breaks.

More Information on Extreme Heat Safety

Temperature Guidelines

We know that Austin is home to warm and often dangerous heat. We recognize the importance of guidelines to keep student-athletes and their coaches safe when the temperature rises. Last spring we piloted our Temperature Guidelines and look forward to using them this school year and beyond.
These temperature guidelines have been established in order to provide a safe and healthy environment for students participating in outdoor activities at Headwaters School. We use the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) from The University of Texas monitoring station to monitor current weather conditions. Additionally, we will carefully watch out for signs of heat-related illness.

We are following national organizations like the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) guidance regarding extreme heat so we are up to date with the newest information. We especially like the following article regarding the importance of acclimatizing your body to physical exertion to prevent heat illness.

Hydration

Headwaters student-athletes must be well-hydrated (normal body weight and light-colored urine) and well-nourished prior to and after training or competing. Regular fluid intake during practice and games/matches should be a priority, especially in the heat. The goal is to drink regularly. Some athletes may opt to add some salt to their diets and sports drinks when training and competing in the heat. This helps the body to hold onto fluid and reduces the risk of muscle cramping caused by large sweat sodium losses. Hydrate regularly and wisely–but don’t overdrink! And don’t forget, energy drinks are NOT appropriate hydration fluids.

This is an excellent article from NFHS on Avoiding Hyponatremia if you want to learn more. We also refer to this NFHS Position Statement and Recommendations for Maintaining Hydration to Optimize Performance and Minimize the Risk for Exertional Heat Illness
