A Note from Ted Graf, Head of School

At Headwaters School, unique, hands-on experiences complement our academic program, providing the spark that ignites a lifelong love of learning.

This approach, supported by our vibrant community, creates an educational journey where curiosity thrives and student expression blossoms. Your gift to the annual fund fuels that spark.

In early childhood, our students experience the wonders of nature within the classroom. Each fall, our preschoolers interact with nature as we bring in pumpkins, transforming the classroom into an autumnal playground. The children roll, kick, and sit on the pumpkins, engaging with their textures. They delight in the messy fun of cutting them open, scooping out the goop and seeds, and learning through sensory play.

Our elementary students dive deep into cultural research projects. Each student selects a culture or country to explore, conducts thorough, self-guided research, and immerses themself in their chosen topic. This journey culminates in presentations where students share their findings, showcasing their knowledge while honing their speaking skills. It’s a transformative experience that nurtures their confidence, individuality, and self-expression.

In middle and high school, our students leverage our downtown Austin location as a unique learning environment. Recently, a high school student led a project inspired by their science curriculum. After learning about the need for more native plants and pollinators along Shoal Creek, the student mobilized an entire Project Week Group to develop seed balls and distribute them along our local waterways. This initiative not only helped foster native plants and pollinators but also allowed students to engage in community service, collaborating with local nonprofits like Shoal Creek Conservancy. Their passion for science, commitment to community, and leadership skills were at the heart of this endeavor.

Vibrant educational experiences like these are brought to life by the generous support of our donors. Your gift ensures we can continue to create and sustain programs that bring classroom learning to life. Thank you for considering a gift that taps our students’ intrinsic motivation to learn and builds a joyful and challenging environment.

With gratitude,
