January/February 2025: Staff Spotlight on Stephen Beatty

Headwaters School
From behind the camera to the front of the classroom, Middle and High School Film Guide Stephen Beatty brings a passion for film and storytelling to Headwaters.
With a degree in film from Texas Christian University, he started his career as a camera operator and floor director at CBS 11 before discovering his love for teaching. Since 2011, he has taught film and media, developed district-wide A/V curriculum, and served as an Electives Department Chair—all while inspiring students to see film as a powerful, multicultural art form.

After his first semester at Headwaters, Stephen has already made an impact, helping students explore both the technical craft and artistic depth of filmmaking. He believes that trust, relationships, and creative freedom are at the heart of great learning—values that make Headwaters feel like home already.

This spring, Stephen is launching a Middle School Broadcasting Class after school, giving students hands-on experience in news production. He will also lead a Film Camp this summer for rising 7th–12th graders on June 23–27 and July 14–18, offering a deep dive into filmmaking techniques and storytelling.

We’re so grateful to have Stephen on our team!

What Brought Stephen To Headwaters

I was initially drawn to Headwaters for the IB curriculum, which allows me to push boundaries in my teaching approach. The smaller class sizes create genuine connections with each student, and I appreciate the freedom I have here to bring innovative ideas into the classroom. What's truly special, though, is how this environment has fostered an extraordinary community of engaged students and passionate educators. The learner-centric spirit at Headwaters represents education at its best.

Fun Facts about Stephen

  • I was born in Germany because both my parents were in the Army and stationed there at the time.
  • I have a Puli (a mop dog) named Ozzy.
The soundtrack to The Blues Brothers was the first CD I ever bought. It's also my favorite movie.
